3rd (LAST) song of the Finals of the Sakura Con 2009 Rock Band 2 Tournament. 3 bands remained but only 1 could win… Each band picked a song, then we all played them and got points according to our rankings on each. We HAD to win this last song or else we would lose the tournament. The Flaming Chickens chose this song - I’m guessing they wanted to pick something that would be ridiculously hard for all the bands, possibly forcing people to go down a difficulty, not to mention the fact that it’s a pretty epic song to end the tournament with. At 8 minutes long, it’s not just technically difficult for pretty much all the instruments (except vocals) but also a sheer test of endurance.

The Delinquents were first to tackle it and their drummer couldn’t quite manage the song on Expert, causing them to fail out about 38% into the song. Luckily for them, the rule throughout the tourney was that if a band failed out before 40% they were allowed to restart ONCE, and were given the opportunity to change difficulties if necessary. The Delinquents actually decided to swap their drummer and vocalist and had to bring both of those instruments down to Hard as a result. However, they had a solid run considering the last-minute swap, and scored nearly 2 million points.

Flaming Chickens went up next and unfortunately failed out at 80% (I forget the exact circumstances). So finally it was the moment of truth. Luckily my bandmates were more than up for it. Pulsar of course would have no trouble at all, and at this point I don’t think anyone apart from those in our circle knew just how good Willay is on drums but they were about to find out. As for me, I certainly never envisioned I would have to voxbass Panic Attack in a tournament setting, but here it was! Going into the song, here were the standings:

Panic Attack Final Scores:
The Delinquents: 1,973,481
Flaming Chickens: failed (80%)
Less Than Pi: ??

It really did feel like we were entering a final battle, but my thought going into it was that, even if we couldn’t beat The Delinquents’ score, if we could just pass the song all on Expert without failing, I would consider it a victory that the other bands couldn’t achieve. But the end result ended up being so ridiculously close you’ll just have to see it to believe it!

H2O MrPulsar and I decided to enter the Rock Band 2 Tournament that was taking place at Sakura Con in Seattle this year. Nyx wasn’t able to travel up for it so we found a local drummer Willay through ScoreHero: http://www.youtube.com/user/willaydrums
In the end we couldn’t get another guitarist/bassist so I decided to sing and play at the same time. On stage. :o

To enter, all bands first had to play a qualifier. Then they seeded us randomly and had us play band vs. band on two songs (each band choosing one - judges choose tiebreaker if necessary). This was a song we played in the Finals.

Special thanks to MrPulsar’s roommate Kat who let us borrow her video camera, and to my husband Mr. Geek who filmed us and cheered us on. :D

Loading: Apparently, Dream Theatre has the same lengthy taste as Metallica and Dragonforce

Yup, I got Rock Band 2, and it only took me two days to get the Buy a Real Instrument Already achievement (The achievement where you pass the Impossible challenge on any instrument on Expert, this was obtained on drums for me) Technically 5 hours actually when you put only actual game time together. This is one of the Impossible drumming songs. I don’t care how bad I did, I just wanted to get a video up ASAP, and there was really no deep thought in the OD path either. I might as well post this before I get requests saying “Hey kkoser! Do Dream Theatre!” I don’t mind playing this song actually, in fact, I kinda like it. This song takes quite a bit of stamina to play. The setlist in Rock Band 2 is amazing.

Also, I mentioned Dragonforce, I will think it stereotypically of you Dream Theatre fans to make a random comment saying “Dragonforce sucks!” This is just a video showing off the drum chart for one of the most popular songs in the game. Not a video to start a Dragonforce vs Dream Theatre war. I’m not comparing the bands’ skills at all, just comparing the lengths of their songs. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but I would appreciate if you refrain from the Dream Theatre vs Dragonforce wars. It just makes you look like completely obsessed fan boys and it doesn’t make you special. Seriously, when I found some Halo 3 video with a Dragonforce song in it, I was all like “Nice touch adding Dragonforce to that part” then some random Dream Theatre fan decides to start a fight with me. I’m not saying all Dream Theatre fans are like this, but I do find that a majority of them on Youtube like to start Dragonforce vs Dream Theatre wars. Again, please refrain from starting these wars.

Also, no console wars please.

So down below are some questions you might want answered.

Q) What set are you using?
A) I’m using my Rock Band drum set covered with silencers, if you’re going to message me about these, don’t bother. I highly recommend not using these. They increase the chance of your drums breaking if they’re used too much. They don’t offer a better rebound nor do they offer a bigger life span to your drums.

Q) How’d you get the game early?
A) Uh, just did.

Q) I could probably do this and I’m only 9 years old.
A) Guess what, no-one cares how old you are.

Q) Do you play drums in real life?
A) Yes I do. Have for 3 years.

Q) If you play real drums, why do you have such a tight grip?
A) I don’t. It’s the camera angle I’m using that makes you believe that.

Q) It’s spelled “Theater” not “Theatre”
A) Theatre is the British way of spelling it, so there’s not much of a difference.

Q) Actually, Dream Theater is an American band so you can’t do that.
A) Theater Theater Theater Theater Theater Theater Theater Theater Theater Theater Theater Theater Theater Theater Theater Theater Theater! Happy?

Q) How old are you?
A) 18

Q) Get a life and play a real instrument, got!
A) So I don’t have a life just because I’m good at a video game? I can definitely see how great your life must be. Also, I play piano and drums, so suck it.

Q) OMFGzorz, Y R tere onry half teh bass notes?!
A) It’s only a one bass pedal game. Adding double bass notes to a game with only one pedal would be fricken retarded.

Q) They should’ve put double bass in RB2
A) It’d be cool, but there would be alot of problems with that: They would have to account for people who only have RB drum sets. Also, there are many people who would find double bass to be difficult to grasp, even people who play real drums.

Q) You think this song is hard? Look at Visions!
A) If you want my opinion on it, this song is harder to pass than Visions. Visions is just fast, while this song has alot more technical manuevers that can confuse you. This is just my opinion, because when I was sighreading these songs, I failed Panic Attack for often than Visions.

Panic Attack Gold Stars - 430k

Pretty Good run, only missed in 2 or 3 spots. Definitely will be going for this FC soon.

My Accomplishments: http://rockband.scorehero.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=977
My Live Stream Feed: http://www.someguy913.com
Info on my Drum Setup: http://rockband.scorehero.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5894

FAQ
1. Do you play real drums too?
Yes, I do. I’ve been playing drums for a little over 4 years now, focusing mainly on trap set, with some limited hand percussion experience as well. Before I learned to play real drums, though, I also played Drummania, a drum simulation game made by Konami and part of the Bemani family of music games. It really got me interested in drums, I highly recommend it if you can find a machine near you.

2. What do you use to play Rock Band? Is your kit modded or something?
Please see the link above entitled “Info on my Drum Setup”.

3. How much did your setup cost?
The Roland TD-6 SX-T that I use goes for around $2000 on Musician’s Friend, probably cheaper if you look on ebay or Craig’s List.

4. Wow, that’s a lot of money. You really spent $2k just to play Rock Band?
Nope, I bought the Roland kit months before Rock Band came out to do some recording and session work. I also badly needed a quieter way to practice drums in my apartment; an acoustic kit with silencers just wasn’t cutting it. It was just very good fortune that I already had the kit when people began discovering how to hook up MIDI kits to Rock Band.

5. Ok, but isn’t that kind of cheating?
I suppose everyone will form their own opinions about this subject no matter what, but the official word right now is that it is not cheating. Posts on both ScoreHero and the Rock Band forums have been made about this mod, and both the ScoreHero mods, rockband.com mods, and Harmonix staff have ruled that this type of kit does not invalidate competitive scores. They have, however, ruled that any sort of double-bass pedal mod would invalidate such scores. For the record, I use a DW5000 single pedal.

6. What do you use to record your videos?
For the direct-capture I use an Adaptec Gamebridge. You can get them from Amazon.com for between $30-$50 USD. For the external view I use an older Sony Handycam. (It still records on Digital-8s…)

7. Why do you usually only hit the bass pedal during the Big Rock Ending? Doesn’t that get you less points?
For an explanation of how the points gained from a BRE work, please see the description of my Run to the Hills Gold-star video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dPGiIZ…
Alternately, search the Technique forums at rockband.scorehero.com for in-depth explanations of BREs for both guitar and drums.

8. Can I add you as a friend/play Band Quickplay/Score Duel/hang out with you?
I’d love to! Unfortunately, I’m just one guy who also has a job, girlfriend, and is a full-time college student. So, what little time I do have for Rock Band, I’m usually spending either working on Solo Tour, or playing with my ScoreHero band, More Cowbell! http://rockband.scorehero.com/forum/v…
As for the friend thing, XBL only lets me have 100 friends, and I reached that limit a long time ago, and it’s getting very full of people I either know in real life or am in frequent contact with on Scorehero, so it’s really not likely. =/ Sorry. Don’t be afraid to send me a message, though. I can’t promise I’ll respond the same day or even the same week, but I’ll do my best to get back to you.

9. . Get a life.
Please phrase all insults in the form of a question. Also, see question #8.

I have so much to write about this FBFC, yet I am almost speechless. (Ha - who am I kidding? I’m never lost for words). This took us a really long time, probably about 8 hours of playing time total, if not more. Which really reminds me of how much of a life I have.

OK. Seriously. I think we all hate this song now, because we have played it for so long, lol. But this is DEFINITELY the most epic thing to have ever happened on Rock Band. It’s not really easy on any instrument, Guitar has an insane solo, Bass is basically just as difficult as Guitar for the entire song, as well as pretty strange fretting during the “Weird Organ Part” as we began to call it, hahaha. Drums are ING INSANE. I’ll have to ask Santos exactly how many people have FCed it in general on drums, but it’s not a lot.. Vocals are obviously the easiest (well if you are tone deaf I guess they wouldn’t be easy), but there is one phrase that’s kind of a pain in the if you aren’t consistent.

I can’t believe we did this, honestly. It’s so amazing. I’ve never really been one to brag about our accomplishments, but I think after this we deserve it. I have no reservations this time: This -IS- the most insane and epic thing to have ever been done on Rock Band since it was released.

Make sure you give SantoOs lots of love, he FCed this TWELVE times throughout the course of our grinding. No other drummer has FCed it that many times, let alone in Band Quickplay, where there is a ridiculous amount of pressure. A lot of you hardcore followers know that it was usually JPrez that choked our runs, but don’t give him too much beef.. I’d like to see you FC a song as nuts as that under the pressure he had when it was all relying on him. The worst was probably when he missed in the last 12 seconds of the song. You can imagine how bad he felt after that. We also Full Band 100%ed this, but Negative overstrummed in about the last 30 seconds of the song.

It’s not just about doing the FBFC though. A huge reason why we were able to keep doing it after all of the frustration is because we are really good friends. We support each other and don’t let the game get in the way of our friendship. I think that’s the most important thing of all.

Longest description ever? haha. Be sure to favorite, comment, rate, and enjoy the video, we worked very hard to get this. :)

During Organ Solo B.

Yes. Harmonix did it again.

During 0:13, 1:29, and 1:48, after the yellow note and before the red one.

There is another broken note on an on-disc song. And, of course, it has to be on of the last tier songs, especially the HARDEST one. And not at the very beginning. It’s just randomly in the middle.

Truthfully, it’s not that bad of a broken note, but it’s still a pain when you miss it.
